Retro Style of Mad Men’s Arty Friends

If the real Ad Men on Mad Men had an illustrator gal-pal with serious finesse it could have been some skirt wearin’ beahive Betty named Dyna Moe. But the real Dyna is here and now and paintin’ pretty some slick retro designs. After her friend, Mad Men star Rich Sommer (Harry Crane) asked her to create his Christmas card last season, it got the ball rolling on her illustrating one image to represent each episode of the award-winning show.

She’s been working on these for a while, but it now seems the whole collection inspired by Season 2 is up on her Flicker page “Mad Men Illustrated – where you can check it out in slideshow format. Part of Season 1 -which is still in the works- is up there too. And, if anything catches your eye, she’s selling some of them on cards, mugs, t-shirts at her Zazzle store. joan-holloway-paper-doll-dyna-moe

The design of Betty Draper getting all housewife agro in her Ossining Calling (nod to the Clash) is a lot more modern old school but never-the-less cool. My faves though all seem to be of Joan Holloway. The “What A Doll!” framed poster includes “almost all of the outfits worn by Sterling-Cooper head secretary / office manager in the first Season (which you can get unframed, and play with like paper dolls… ah, the good ol’ days of paper dolls!)

Dyna doesn’t have a very detailed biography up on her site, but she does have a collection of all the episodes of “Cakey! The Cake From Outer Space” on her blog “Let My Fists Do the Talkin’” – surely just as fascinating.

Miss Moe did announce recently that Zazzle took down her Mad Men calendar for “copyright infringement” to which she responded, “is technically false. I could argue against it pretty easily, but who buys a 2009 calendar in 2009? So, I let it be.” So if you are interested in any of the work, you might be best to get it quick. Though she does mention that we shouldn’t cry for her, that she has bigger fish in the fryer and that Zazzle’s usefulness may have run its course – stay tuned! I’m sure anything that dynamo does will be fun and styley and we’ll keep you posted!
